The Barry Goldberg Blues Band ♦ The Barry Goldberg Reunion ♦ The Chicago Loop

Chicago—That Toddlin' Town

The Windy City was the home of the blues in the late 50s. Many black blues artists travelled to Chi-Town to record with Leonard Chess. Muddy Waters, Willie Dixon, and Howlin' Wolf (among others) found a welcome home at 2120 S Michigan (Chess studios) and in the blues clubs (like Big John's).

With all that energy around, well-off white guys began to grasp the blues idiom. A group of skilled musicians, they played on each others records adding their particular ideas. Looming over all these kids was Paul Butterfield. In his circle floated Michael Bloomfield, Barry Goldberg (here), Harvey Mandel, Charlie Musslewhite, and John Hammond.

They all released records in this time zone, but some of them aren't listed here as they were group jams. Chicago Anthology (1969)

, Ivar Avenue Reunion (1971)

, and Blues From Chicago (1973)
Blues From Chicago

are typical of these "group" records--no one artist is the leader. Use the Artist Index to track down their contributions.
