Did Rotary Connection Back Up Muddy Waters?
Some histories of the Rotary Connection contend that they backed up Muddy Waters and Howlin' Wolf, both in late 1968. Nope and here's why. To this reporter, Rotary Connection was all about the voices and arrangements. Charles Stepney & Marshall Chess (Leonard's nepo kid) put together the singers along with their group of Chicago sessionmen (who wanted to call themselves "the Electric N****rs", but common sense prevailed). Consider them Chess' Wrecking Crew or Funk Brothers. Bobby Christian, Pete Cosey, Phil Upchurch, and Morris Jennings were the core for the first four albums. They also worked with Muddy on the Electric album and the follow-up After The Rain (adding Gene Barge on Sax). At the same time, they worked on The Howlin' Wolf Album, among others. Check out their credits on Discogs. But, none of the voices were utilzed, therefore the Rotary Connection did NOT back-up Muddy Waters. |
