When people mention "acid," two names come to mind: Ken Kesey and Timothy Leary

(and after twelve "tests") Ken Kesey (& The Merry Pranksters) decided it was time to graduate
Acid Test Diploma

. Scheduled for Winterland (a day before a Democratic political rally), it was moved on short notice to a warehouse near Market Street. Quite the event, I'm told—by Tom Wolfe in The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test. Or, you can buy the movie done by Ken Kesey's son. Or hunt around the internets for the 6-CD set of recordings from most of the tests. It's pretty interesting listening, let me tell you. The following album, released in 1966, is included in this set.

Dr Timothy Leary
Turn On, Tune In, Drop Out was the mantra that this Harvard psychology professor developed after experimenting with mind-altering drugs at his Millbrook, NY estate. He was the spiritual guide for many of the days' musicians, political types and college kids. He was a great influence of the times, inspiring many songs about what transpired when you were "tripping."

In June, 1969, Leary decided to run for California Governor (against St Ronnie). Every campaign needs a theme song, so his friend, John Lennon, offered to compose a song based on his campaign slogan: "Come together, join the party." But Leary was sent back to prison for marijuana possesion, effectively ending his campaign. Lennon replaced some of the lyrics with gobbledygook words and recorded it with the rest of his Liverpool chums.

Here are a few of the recordings he made promoting his views on the subject. The last one listed has the attraction of Stills & Hendrix as back-up musicians.

Note: Can't forget The Moody Blues song about Timothy—Legend Of A Mind (from In Search Of The Lost Chord, 7/68)
When Leary died in 1996, the Moodies re-recorded the song with updated lyrics.

Second Opinion
Not everybody shared the "enlightment" that Leary preached. There were records released that were like bad trips, what with the ham-handed effects and nightmare stories. This Capitol record tries to present a more balanced view of LSD. Side one featured an open-ended interview (a sheet provided the local broadcaster the questions to ask). Side two had excerpts from another Capitol LSD record.
